Marston M. Anderson

Marston M. Anderson, owner of Marston M. Anderson Masonry and Construction, died suddenly on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. He was 59.

As a craftsman and master stonemason, "Marstie" as he was known by his friends, left his mark in the churches, businesses, parks, and homes of numerous northern Door County neighborhoods. For many centuries, the secrets and techniques of the stonemason have been passed down from craftsman to craftsman, father to son. Marstie was a fourth-generation stonemason who relied on traditional methods, learned from his father and grandfathers, to create or restore beautiful structures that would last for hundreds of years. It takes an artist to understand how the stones lay. It takes a stonemason to find precision and clean joints. Marstie exemplified both of these virtues.

Born and raised in Sister Bay, he was one of two children of Marston G. Anderson and his wife, Dolores (Polly), also life-time residents of Sister Bay.

Marstie had always been interested in anything mechanical whether it be cars, antique gas engines or outboard motors, especially vintage models. He was an active member and past president of the Old Bolts Car Club, a local group of classic auto enthusiasts, and will be remembered for his hot rod, the "T-Bucket" as well as his 1949 yellow pickup truck.

Marstie was also a member of the Northeastern Wisconsin Antique Power Association, and proudly showed his collection of antique gas engines that he had brought back to life, every year at the Valmy Thresheree and at other various festivals throughout the County.

Marstie was also proud to have been a Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Firefighter. He was retired from the Fire Department after 19 years of service.

Marstie is survived by his aunt, Ardis Fletcher of Sister Bay, and his uncle, Gerald Knudson (Karen), of Sister Bay, and his cousins, Alison Fletcher, Alicia Fletcher Gamble, Stephen Fletcher, Heidi Gustafson Orstead, Pamela Gustafson Reilly, and Kurt Knudson as well as his longtime companion, Joni Garcia. He will be missed by many in his family and his community.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Marston G. and Dolores (Polly) Anderson; his sister, Laurie Sue (Anderson) Olson; his grandparents, Gilbert and Myrtle Anderson and Roy and Irene Knudson; his aunt, Arlene Gustafson; and his uncle, M. Keyes Fletcher.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sister Bay Moravian Church. Friends may call at the Church from 10:00 a.m. until time of Service. Interment will be after the service at the Church's cemetery.
