Orville "Butch" Conrad Jess Obituary

Orville “Butch” Conrad Jess, 77, of Washington Island, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

He was born October 18, 1942 on Washington Island, to the late Orville R. and Florence (Haas) Jess. After graduating from Washington Island High School with the class of 1960, he moved to Milwaukee to complete his diesel mechanic apprenticeship. Butch started his mechanic career with Schoolway Transportation and part-time at Heileman Marine in Hales Corners. He was then employed as the night foreman diesel mechanic for Diamond Reo trucks in Milwaukee.

On August 4, 1962, Butch and Karen Pluta were united in marriage at Whitnall Park Lutheran Church in Hales Corners. In 1969, the couple moved back to Washington Island. Butch worked at the Washington Island Electric Cooperative until 1984. In 1982, Butch and Karen opened a boat repair company on the island called Marine Diesel Specialists. The two operated the business together in the summers before retiring in 2016. For 33 years, Butch and Karen wintered in Naples, Florida, where he worked for other major marinas as well. Butch is the current manager of the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum.

After moving back to Washington Island, Butch served as the School Board President for 6+ years and on the library board. He volunteered for the Washington Island Fire Department for 15 years, was an original board member for Friends of Plum and Pilot Island, was the commander for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for several years, and volunteered time at the Washington Island Archives. He was a member of the Jaycees, a lifetime member of the Sportsmen’s Club, and enjoyed being a member of the ROMEO island group. Butch was proud to have restored a 1941 Ford flatbed pickup truck, which took him over three years.

Butch loved being outdoors whether it was hunting, watching Islanders Baseball, or fishing with his granddaughters. He was an avid Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers fan. Butch loved his hunting dogs as if they were family and playing cards at the Middle Bar, especially Uff-Da Marbles. Whenever he had to sit still for a moment, he picked up a book to read.

Butch will be missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Karen; daughter, Denise Jess (Jani Koester); granddaughters, Rowan and Gemma Koester-Jess; brothers-in-law, Michael (Jenny) Pluta and Gary (Patti) Pluta; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kelly Robert Jess; and brother, Robert (Leanne) Jess.

Butch’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church on Washington Island with Pastor Alan Schaffmeyer officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Washington Island Town Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Butch’s name to the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum or a Washington Island organization of your choice.
