Barbara Marie Shine

     Barbara Marie Shine, 89, of Baileys Harbor, WI, and recently of Crystal Lake, IL, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at JourneyCare Hospice CareCenter in Barrington, IL.

     Her parents emigrated from Sweden, passing through Ellis Island, before putting down roots in Evanston, IL where Barbara was born on July 1, 1933. Barbara’s father, Nels, was a fisherman in Lapland Sweden, which bordered Finland on Kalix River. After visiting Door County, WI, Nels knew their family would finally settle there so he could, once again, become a commercial fisherman. Their family lived in the famous Heidelberg House in the Town of Jacksonport, WI.

     Barbara’s husband, Robert William Shine, is the fourth-generation Shine family from Door County, WI. They met at Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, WI, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 9, 2023. In 1963, they moved to Palatine, IL where Bob was offered a job as a linotype operator. Barbara loved to sew and was a wonderfully talented career seamstress. She owned her own business and worked for Nordstrom as a tailor. Retirement brought them back to Door County, where they built their dream home on Ekman property next to Barbara’s sister, Malin (Trudy) Ekman. In retirement, Barbara continued to work as a seamstress for a local store, making custom patterns and clothing.

     She enjoyed golf and cross-country ski racing. Barbara competed in the 18-mile Kortelopet race in Hayward, WI - a global, 10,000-person race. She was a huge Green Bay Packers fan. She never missed a game and donned her lucky Packers’ socks, only washing them when her beloved team lost.

     Barbara was the beloved husband of Robert Shine for 70 years; loving mother of Carrie (the late Herman) Bueno; and Bill Shine; adoring grandmother of Aimee Bueno; and other relatives.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marlene Ekman; and other relatives.      

     Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy., Palatine, IL 60067.

     Visitation will continue after 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 7973 State Hwy. 57, Baileys Harbor, WI 54202. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Gary Scharrig officiating. Barbara will be laid to rest in the Baileys Harbor Town Cemetery in Door County, WI. 

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church (7973 State Highway 57, Baileys Harbor, WI 54202) or the Wisconsin Humane Society - Door County Campus (3475 Park Drive, Sturgeon Bay WI 54235).
