Douglas Lee Van Vorous, 79, of Sister Bay passed suddenly on Tuesday May 30, 2023, having just parred the fourth hole at Peninsula State Park.
Born July 5, 1943, in Sturgeon Bay he grew up in Fish Creek, the son of the late Hudson and Marian (Johnson) Van Vorous. He was a proud graduate of Gilbraltar High School class of 1961. He was the chairman of the fifty year and over reunions for his graduating class for many years. During his high school years, he caddied at Peninsula State Park Golf Course on his weekends and summers where his passion for the sport of golf was born.
Following his graduation Doug spent four years in honorable service to his country in the United States Marine Corps. While stationed in Quantico, Virginia, he met his future wife Dixie (Warner) who he married on February 16th, 1965.
After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to Milwaukee where he started a successful career in life insurance with Modern Woodman of America. His career with the company saw him move to Sturtevant, Wisconsin as a district manager. His success there led to another promotion and a move for his family to Western Pennsylvania as an agency manager for the company.
He and Dixie moved to Geneva, Illinois where they had an active social life and Doug volunteered for Delnor Hospital where his passion for volunteering his time and talent to various organizations was born. They also frequented Door County planning their future retirement.
Upon retirement, he and Dixie returned to Door County, Wisconsin where he was an active member in American Legion Billy Weiss Post in Sister Bay, Sister Bay Lions, and Knights of Columbus. He was also involved with supporting the Sister Bay baseball team, The Bays.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Dixie; two adult children, Deanna (Kevin) Kunkel of Pickerington, Ohio and Damon (Diane) Van Vorous of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and six grandchildren Tyler, Danielle, Logan and Brooks Kunkel and Brandon and Mackenzie Van Vorous. He’s also survived by his godchild, Sarah Luczak of Rocky Hill, Connecticut; and his brother, Gary Van Vorous; and multiple nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hudson and Marian Van Vorous; his brother, Gale Van Vorous; and Sister Sandra Marine.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023 at Stella Maris Parish-Fish Creek site with Fr. Thomas Farrell officiating. Burial and military honors will follow the Mass at Blossomberg Cemetery, in Peninsula State Park, in Fish Creek.
Friends may call Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Stella Marish Parish-Fish Creek site and Monday at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. A parish wake will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the church.
Memorials may be given in Douglas’s name for the Northern Door Chapter of St. Vincent de Paul-Stella Maris and Wounded Warriors.
