Eugene, "Gene", A. Manning, 89, of Washington Island, Wisconsin, passed away on October 22, 2025.
Gene was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late Eugene and Norma (Oelhafen) Manning. An excellent student and athlete, Gene attended Shorewood High School. He graduated summa cum laude from Colgate University in Hamilton New York in 1958, and The London School of Economics in London, England, before earning his PhD from The University of Wisconsin, Madison.
In 1958, Gene married his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte Seaman. They were blessed with three children, Paul, Michael and John. The family moved according to Gene's career, including teaching at Philips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire and Carleton College, in Northfield, Minnesota, eventually moving to Bethesda, Maryland, after Gene joined the O.N.E. at the Central Intelligence Agency.
Gene's career and personal life took him all over the world, including two years living in Singapore with his family.
Gene and Charlotte retired to Washington Island, Wisconsin in 1994. The family had loved vacationing on the island since the late 1960s. Building their retirement home was the culmination of a lifelong dream.
Gene was predeceased by his son, Paul. He is succeeded by his wife, Charlotte; son, Michael (Eun Joo Ha); son, John (Kim Sutherland); daughter-in-law, Rebeca Manning (Jim Michie); grandchildren, Daniel, Charlotte, and Laura Manning (James Jarvis); brother-in-law, Richard Seaman; nieces, Trischa Loeble, and Karen Holzman; nephew, Gerald Seaman; and a large extended family.
Gene lived an adventurous and wonderful life. He will be missed by many.
A private family Celebration of Life was held.
