Jane Wescott Weis

     Jane Wescott Weis passed away peacefully on October 29th, 2023 surrounded by family and friends.

     Born on March 31, 1928 in Evanston, Illinois, she was the pride and joy of Oella (Gaylord) and Joe Wescott. If home is where the heart is, Jane was at home wherever she was. She was known to make friends in elevators and grocery store checkout lines.

     Jane grew up in Evanston. Her family experienced the hardships of the Depression and lost their Glencoe home. Moving to a one-bedroom apartment on Central Street in Evanston, Jane collected tinfoil and helped her mom tend a victory garden during WWII. Once having a dream of being an international secretary, she pursued an education at DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana) in romance languages and was a proud Delta Zeta sorority sister. After college, Jane traveled with a friend to Europe. Returning home, she attended the Catherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Chicago and began her career as a secretary. Jane had several secretarial jobs through the years in the Chicago area: working for The American Savings and Loan League, Porter and Dorothy Heaps at Keyboard Publications, St. Matthew's Church, American Hospital Supply Corporation, and Northwestern University.

     She first met her future husband at Haven Middle School in 7th grade. Reuniting as young adults at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, they started a 56-year loving marriage with many adventures. Jane and Jack raised their three children in Evanston. She spent countless hours volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Boy Scouts, her children's schools and especially her church.

     Jane loved to travel. She and Jack traveled to many different places around the world. Whether it was an Elderhostel, a cruise in Europe or a trip to Florida, they enjoyed their excursions together. Closer to home, they always enjoyed taking the back roads and finding small, local diners that were a little out of the way.

     In retirement, they moved to their beloved Door County, Wisconsin where they had deep roots (Camp Shu Shu Ga and Sunset Resort on Washington Island.) They built strong ties within their community at Scandia Village in Sister Bay. They enjoyed tending to their cottage in Ephraim, taking classes at The Clearing, volunteering at The Ridges and The Ephraim Foundation. Jane continued her PEO affiliation in Door County and her commitment to philanthropy while building lifelong friendships through this chapter. Jane especially loved serving her spiritual family at St. Luke’s Church in Sister Bay as well as cashiering at Bargain’s Resale Store.

     Jane's greatest superpower was building a community of friends wherever she landed.

     She will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren: James (Nicky Glover) Weis and their son, Logan Weis; Bill (Susan Utley) Weis and their son, Justin Weis; Liz (Brian) Lombardi and their children, Mackenzie, Bailey, and Morgan Lombardi; in addition to many beloved nieces and nephews; and countless friends near and far. Her caring neighbors, residents and staff at Scandia Village and her St. Luke's family were especially close to her.

     Her lasting legacy will be her commitment to volunteerism, her friendliness and her ability to always look on the bright side.

     A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16th, 2023 at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, 11836 State Highway 42, Ellison Bay, WI 54210 with Mother Brit Frazier, of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, officiating.
