Marjorie June Aurelius

     Marjorie June Aurelius passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 19, 2022. She was born on July 15, 2014 in Milwaukee to Lauren Aurelius and Fred Wahlen. Born with a traumatic brain injury, Marjorie defied all odds, earning the nickname “Miracle Marjorie”.

     Marjorie was a second grader at Gibraltar Elementary School in Fish Creek. Her classmates were fiercely protective of her. Marjorie’s teachers recall her friends being eager to learn about her and having big dreams that someday she’d be able to leave her wheelchair to run and play with them. Her classmates were always willing to lend a hand or read and share their work with her.

     Marjorie was well traveled – venturing to Seattle, New Orleans and Florida. And even more well accessorized – you never knew what color sunglasses she’d be wearing. Marjorie loved to be outside, especially at her grandparent’s beach or on walks through Sister Bay. She especially loved her “sissy” Rue – a Goldendoodle companion dog gifted to her through Make-A-Wish Wisconsin. Despite her challenges, Marjorie responded most to books, her mommy’s voice, her daddy’s kisses and Grandma Jeanne’s ukulele sing-alongs. Marjorie showed her love through hand holding and world-class snuggles.

     Marjorie was involved in her community, joining Girl Scouts this year. She participated in events like the Barney Fun Run and loved cheering on the Brewers, Bucks, Packers and the Sister Bay Bays. Most recently, Marjorie was going to therapy at CP in Green Bay – making progress and new friends with every visit.

     To meet Marjorie was to love her. The impact she made on the Door County community will be lasting. A letter sent home to Gibraltar students following her death said it best: Marjorie’s short time with us taught us to appreciate the beauty of differences and loving each other for who we are.

     While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in the wisdom of Marjorie's classmate who said when Marjorie died her wheelchair stayed here on earth and she went to heaven and is running free.

     Survivors include her parents; maternal grandparents, David and Jeanne Aurelius; paternal grandparents, Peter and Joleen Wahlen; aunts, Martha (Adam) Hutchinson, Megan (John) Shine and Susan Wahlen; cousins, Leon Hutchinson, Jack and William Shine and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

     Marjorie was preceded in death by her great grandparents.

     Marjorie’s family would like to extend special thanks to Door County EMS, Chris Hecht, Door County Sherriff’s Department, the Complex Care team at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Dr. Amy Fogarty and Door County Medical Center, Beth Alumbaugh and Marjorie’s Gibraltar special education team, teachers, therapists and friends.

     A visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay. A celebration of Marjorie’s life will be held in the same location on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Marjorie’s name to Kendall Park Playground Fund, P.A.T.H. of Door County or CP of Green Bay.
