Meryl Cheney Cunningham, 84, of Washington Island, passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
She was born January 23, 1939 in Montclair, New Jersey, daughter of the late Harold Gordon and Constance (Goodwin) Cheney. She married Donald Frank Cunningham on September 26, 1959 in Wheaton, Illinois. The couple began building their retirement home on Washington Island in 1991 and eventually moved there full-time. On the Island, they were members of Bethel Church. Meryl enjoyed quilting, knitting, and reading.
She will be missed by her children, Jimmy (Linda) Cunningham of Wheaton, IL, Dawn Nelson of Washington Island, and Wendy (Edward) Barbeau of Port Barrington, IL; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Cunningham, Trevor (Jessica) Cunningham, Tucker Cunningham, Alanna Cunningham, Courtney (Dylan) Villarreal, Brittany (Tyler) Ball, Hunter Nelson, Rachel (Oscar Castillo) Nelson, William “Billy” (Katie) Gebhardt, Hannah (Chrystie) Gebhardt-Wojcik, Benjamin (Emily) Gebhardt, and Brett Gebhardt; great-grandchildren, Cohen, Joslyn, Nora, Maverick, Aria, Vivian, Isla, Samuel, Fin, Oliver, Ruby, Macayon, Zennah, and Amine; and brother, Harold Gordon (Victoria) Cheney Jr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and son-in-law, Dan Nelson.
Meryl’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Bethel Church on Washington Island at 10:00 a.m.
Visitation for friends and family will be held at the church Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
