Peggy Jean Steffen, age 95 of Washington Island, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
Peggy was born on August 25, 1928, to the late Arvid and Dagmar (Markstrom) Hanson in Chicago, IL. She is a graduate of Senn High School.
Peggy was united in marriage to Robert Steffen, Sr., on January 26, 1948, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Chicago, Il. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1986. She worked on the north side of Chicago as an insurance underwriter for Warner insurance before working with her husband Robert at his insurance office.
She was a former member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and St. Timothy Catholic Church in Chicago and a member of the St. Timothy Woman’s Club all of Chicago, Il. She is a current member of Stella Maris Catholic Paris.
In the late 1960’s, Bob and Peggy travelled by boat with their children to Door County eventually finding and falling in love with Washington Island. They bought a summer home on the west side in 1968 that the family still owns today, which 5 generations have enjoyed over the years.
Peggy enjoyed playing card and board games, especially Bridge. She was an avid reader; her favorite was mystery novels. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and sudoku. In her 70’s Peggy became quite the world traveler, going on several trips with her cousin Doris including China, Ireland, and Australia. She was active in local Bridge groups, an investment club, and volunteer work into her 90’s. Most of all, Peggy enjoyed spending time with her family.
Peggy is survived by her children, Bridget (Lorenc) Roznai, Robert (Kathleen) Steffen, John (Teresa) Steffen, and Brian Steffen; grandchildren, Adam (Rebecca) Steffen, Loren Roznai, Karl (Summer Sanford) Roznai, Melinda (Sean) Lawrence, Mark (Kathryn) Steffen, Audrey (Berto) Navarro, Marcia Steffen, Brad (Amneris) Steffen, and Robert Steffen III; step-grandchildren, Eleanor Haehlen, Shannon (Chris) Stillwell, John McBrady, and Graham (Maggie) Givot; and 22 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, daughter, Margaret Jean (Mike) Steffen French, and her parents.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at noon at Washington Island Cemetery with Deacon David Kowalski officiating. Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
