Celebrating a Life Well-Lived
Our gracious savior called Richard E. Hallstrand home on June 17, 2025. Beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, loving brother, brother-in-law, cousin, uncle and friend, he will be greatly missed. Rick left us at the age of 70 after many years of fighting oral cancer.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Rick grew up in Miami, Florida. He attended Palmetto High School and attended the University of South Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business. After graduating he returned to Miami where he developed a strong sense of community while serving with the Miami Dade Fire Department for 30 years, achieving the rank of Captain. The Lord placed his loving wife, Linda, in his life as a renter of his townhouse rental property. Rick and Linda became friends until one shared sunny afternoon. Three days later Rick proposed, and Linda accepted. Three months later they were married and together they shared 37 years of marriage.
Rick welcomed Linda's son, Brad Young, to his family when they married. Brad moved to Miami to attend college, joining the Miami Police Department after graduation. He later transferred to Miami Dade Fire Department, following in Rick's footsteps. Brad continues to work with the fire department and is married to Courtney (nee Kratz). Together they have Rick's only grandchild, five-year-old Kyleigh. During their marriage, Rick and Linda had one son, Erik. The family continued to live in Miami until Erik's high school graduation when they moved to the Tampa area. Currently Erik lives and works in Milwaukee.
During his teen and young adult years, Rick spent many summers in Door County at the family home his parents had built. In 1988, Rick brought Linda to Door County for their honeymoon, and their family spent much time there over the years. In 2012, they built their dream home in Sister Bay.
Rick had a strong faith in the Lord which only deepened through his suffering during his journey with cancer. Rick and Linda found their church home at Bethel Baptist Church in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin where they were baptized and became members. He loved creating beauty by working hard with his hands, from woodworking to constructing rock-walled flower beds using rocks found on the property. Rick loved being outside and experienced great communion with the Lord while basking in the beauty of His creation. He enjoyed anything having to do with the outdoors, gardening, hiking, fishing, boating or just sitting on the front porch watching a beautiful sunset.
In addition to outdoor activities, Rick was an avid sports enthusiast, a pleasure he shared with his father. As a child, he and his dad shared the love of Little League baseball. As Rick grew to adulthood this became a hobby that he enjoyed both watching and sharing with others. Rick loved playing golf as this meant having outdoor time, although as he would admit, he wasn't a great player.
As time passed and his father was called home to the Lord, Rick assumed the role of family patriarch. He managed the affairs of the family home built by his parents in Sister Bay. Always the listening ear and giver of wise counsel, his family often turned to him. Many stories are shared of Rick leading but always with laughter or a joke. Teasing was Rick's way of showing love, and he enjoyed laughing at himself, gladly embracing the title of "goofball". A trait which grew stronger with his love for the Lord was his willingness to help others whether you were family, friend, or a stranger.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Harold and A. Marjorie (nee Johnson); sister, Karen Miller; and brother-in-law Marks Attwood.
Rick is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Erik; stepson, Brad and spouse Courtney; granddaughter, Kyleigh; brother, David Paul; sister, Patricia and spouse Robert "Bob" Hackett; brother-in-law, Martin "Marty" Miller; sister, Judy and spouse Tony Wood; sister, Margie and spouse Mike Rylee; sister, Lisa Attwood; brother, Bob and spouse Anette; and multiple loving cousins, nieces and nephews, who will continue to honor his memory and celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. His ultimate desire was to share the love of Jesus which had changed his life.
The family invites you to Rick's memorial service which will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Bethel Baptist Church, 852 Europe Bay Road, Ellison Bay, Wisconsin. Luncheon and visitation to follow the service in the fellowship hall.
